WAKE ME WHEN I'M DEAD

Come gather my friends to hear my last song.
At ninety-nine verses it won't last too long.
You can see the table is filled with strong ale
Fine brandy and whiskey and beer.
For I know when I die I'm going down there
So I plan to have fun while I'm here.

Dear friends I'm askin' a favor of you.
When it's time for my soul to move on
Wake me, don't mourn me,
Please don't shed a tear
'til the last of the whiskey is gone.

And if I'm still sober when the Devil he comes
Tell the old man I'm already dead.
Then hide me away in a closet somewhere
And pour him a tall Johnny Red.

But if that doesn't work and he still doesn't leave
Without takin' this body of mine
Tell him I left for Heaven above.
Then I'll duck out the back
And hide in the hills.
But save me that bottle of wine.
