Dr. Mary E. Walker,Civil War POW, only female awarded the Medal of Honor.

Dr. Mary E. Walker Civil War POW

I AM

alone, and scared,

but hopeful,

I AM ~~~~

wounded, beaten

but

I will

 not break, or bow.

I am loyal, true,

 and prayerful

I am one of you.

I am my father's daughter

Do you know me now?

I am a Prisoner of War

all the women prisoners

captured, and killed,

or returned

before........

I am the pride of my town

the heart of my mother

the love of my son

and

at one with my brother

I am downcast

but not forlorn

I may be shackled ~

my hair may be shorn;

I am bruised but am not broken

No useless information

will, by me,

be spoken

Freedom for me,

is the open door

I am

a Female Prisoner of War.

Dr. Mary E. Walker (pictured at the top of the page) served as an assistant surgeon for the Union during the Civil War and was imprisoned by the Confederates (1864). She was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1865, but it was withdrawn in 1917. Dr Walker continued to wear her medal until her death in 1919. Congress restored the medal to her in 1977 and it was awarded again posthumously by President Carter. Dr. Walker is the only woman to be awarded a Medal of Honor.
